Integrated English Instructor Brian Wright » Who I Am

Who I Am

I graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1989 then left to join the U.S. Air Force. While in the Air Force I served as a firefighter in the Middle East, Central America, and Europe, and also as a Basic Military Training Instructor at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX. During my last two years as an enlisted member I earned my Associates of Applied Science in Fire Science and then my Bachelors of Science in Occupational Education.
After earning my undergraduate degree in 2001, I transferred to the United States Navy and commissioned as a Naval Officer. As a Surface Warfare Officer I served on four different ships in four different home ports and held various leadership positions. After ten years in the Navy I retired, moved back to Missouri, and enrolled at Missouri State University. While at MSU I earned my teaching certificate and my Master of Arts in Teaching. I'm currently working on my second masters degree, this one in writing with a focus on technical and professional writing.

I am married with two daughters and two pugs. I enjoy reading (science fiction and history), teaching, and listening to jazz (Miles Davis most of all), classic/prog rock (meaning Pink Floyd and Rush), and lounge/tiki music from the 1950's and 1960's.
My two mottoes are interrelated. First: “Initiative does not come to those who wait.” Second: “The world cries out for . . . the man who can carry a message to Garcia.”

The main thing I want you to leave my class(es) understanding is that English is vitally important to whatever job you may have. I do not focus on fiction; I focus on guiding you in using non-fiction to further your knowledge and future career.
